Staying Loyal to Your Diet on St. Patrick’s Day

healty St. Patrick's day

St. Patrick’s Day is officially just around the corner. A lot of the traditional festivities we are accustomed to on this day, while fun, are not exactly conducive to a healthy lifestyle – green beer, steak and potatoes, and cookies, to name a few. The unfortunate thing about Irish luck is it can’t keep all the calories in that green beer from affecting your diet adversely. Alcohol is one of the biggest roadblocks staying healthy.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: one beer on St. Patrick’s Day isn’t going to cancel out all my weeks of dieting. True. But, be honest; how often do we really stop at one beer? In times of heightened revelry and in the company of friends – almost never. As a matter of fact, according to a recent article published by The Business Standard, people who are dieting have much more trouble fighting off “the temptation of alcohol in the presence of friends.” (http://bit.ly/1gVxLJr)

So, instead of going out with your buddies this St. Patrick’s Day and running the risk of going overboard with the beers and undoing a lot of your hard work and determination as of late, find another way to commemorate this special day. If you really want to eat and drink green, here are a few ingredients you should toss into your St. Patrick’s Day dinner:

  • Kale
  • Kiwi
  • Broccoli
  • Asparagus
  • Green tea
  • Limes
  • Cabbage

These may not be the most traditional St. Patrick’s Day meals, but you are on your way to becoming a brand new you, so why not make some new traditions of your own?

If there is one thing we can learn from the little Leprechaun, it’s that you should protect your treasure. In this case take care not to let your achievements get stolen away from you in a day. Whether that day is St. Patty’s or another gathering that traditionally relies on alcohol and fatty foods, hold on to what you have worked so hard to obtain.

What will your new St. Patty’s Day tradition be?
