FALL TAILGATING TIPS FOR SUCCESS

In the South, there's football season and "fixin' to be" football season!  Hence, tailgating is a way of life. Instead of dreading the "diet-bursting karma" associated with this pastime, think of it as a new season with opportunity to see friends, regroup after a summer plateau, and finish out your initial weight loss goals that were set at the beginning of the year!  This will set precedent for the remainder of the year.

So, with tailgating season in full swing, let's go over a few thoughts that will keep you on a successful course.

1. It's always a great idea to start the day with exercise.  This will energize you!  Get it done before you hit the tailgate because you know that if you wait until afterwards...it won't happen.  It's like paying with a debit card, you're done. With a credit card, you continue to accrue interest.

2. Make a rule that you must sit down to eat.  This helps with avoiding mindless grazing from table to table.

3. Remember, water...water...water!  Keep a bottle in your hand, so its hard to balance both a plate and water. Hydrate! Water breaks down fat, and truly is the "best" fat flusher.  Soft drinks and alcohol are diuretics and ultimately just make you hungry.  Water wards off false hunger 75% of the time and helps to make your stomach feel full.  Consider club soda and a lime if everyone else is having a libation. If you are splurging with a cocktail, be aware that a light beer might be better than a liquor drink due to higher alcohol content in the latter.  Alcohol will dehydrate you while inducing hunger and fat storage due to insulin production.

4. Remember "a" serving is not necessarily a "true" serving.  It may say 100 calories on the label, but then look at the label and you might see that it contains 2.5 servings.

5. Help the tailgate hosts by serving the food/drink or with organization.  Keep yourself busy!

6. Eat a protein bar or shake before you leave for the tailgate.  This will help you combat social hunger.

7. If you are assigned to bring a dessert or dish, be sensible with your choices.  Cut it into small bites. No one at the party needs a 4 x 4 brownie anyway!

8. Pick your favorite item instead of piling everything at the tailgate on your plate.  Portion sizes are key to your success.

Remember to make a plan that includes pre-tailgate exercise, hydration, and educating yourself on proper portion sizes. Use common sense and Enjoy!  You will feel much better when you eat healthy and exercise, and that new fall outfit will wear much better, too.  Decide that you are going to be successful!  You'll see the results during your weekly visit and know that your hard work is paying off!

Good luck to your favorite team and to you in your weight loss journey!!
